| Brown Pelican taken off the Endangered Species list. |
| After 40 years, the Brown Pelican is no longer on an "endangered species list," the Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar said Nov. 11, 2009. It had been pushed to the edge of extinction by the use of pesticides, hunting and loss of habitat. The banning of the pesticide DDT is credited with aiding the resurgence of the species. It's numbers had also been reduced in the 19th century when it was hunted for feathers for women's hats. |
